Hailing from New York by way of Kingston, Jamaica, Dennis “Shango Trex” Llewellyn has been on the scene since the 80s blending the impact and melody of soul music with the rhythm, groove and feel of reggae.
In his early childhood, Shango Trex was introduced to a life as a musician by learning how to play the trumpet for the National Cadet Orchestra. He later became well known for his vocals by being an active member of his church’s choir.
It was only a matter of time before he began performing music professionally.
His style and presence is so unique that he’s had the opportunity of gracing the stage with the likes of Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond, Gregory Isaacs, Luciano, Frankie Paul, and Garnett Silk amongst many others. In an interview Shango states that the passion was always there, but he didn’t actually plan to become a musician; music gravitated towards him and pulled him in.
Shango’s music is uplifting: his songs and charisma have the uncanny, almost supernatural power that can get people together, despite cultural and generational barriers. This is what happens when an artist dares to be different and put personality over spotlight: Shango’s music embraces an eclectic feel, blending an impressive range of influences, from dance, R&B, pop and even a touch of classical.
Shango Trex released a single entitled, “Not Gonna Hold Back Love”, which is a soulful dance track that will keep you moving. Here he pours his heart over an upbeat rhythm by expressing his feelings of love.
Right now, you can catch Shango in the studios creating stimulating music with his most recent project being “Rise and Shine 3.11”, a tribute track featuring about 15 talented artists showing honor and support to those affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan two years ago. This project is confirmation that Shango is developing his music precisely the way he’s always wanted to. By utilizing his talents, he creates melodies that bring people together from all walks of life and he will surely earn the prestige that is demanded by the depth and quality of his songs.
